Radio Reforma is the only FM radio station reaching over 10,000 people in the communities around San Isidro Reforma, in the Sierra Norte region in Northern Oaxaca, Mexico. In an area stricken with land disputes, it provides a crucial platform for discussion of issues that affect the communities in the area. Radio Reforma Vital Statistics Full Station Name: Radio Reforma Location: San Isidro Reforma, Oaxaca, Mexico Frequency: 94.1 MHz Installed in: January 2006 Collaborating Partner: CIPO-RFM (Consejo Indigeno Popular de Oaxaca - Ricardo Flores Magon Main Objectives: used as a communication tool for the 10 - 15 communities which pick them up in the region, promoting awareness of issues such as indigenous people's rights, the environment, women's rights and domestic abuse. Station Contact: Miguel Cruz Moreno, Communications Coordinator at CIPO-RFM - email: mocumi (at) hotmail.com History of the project In January of 2006, RadioActive worked with the Mexican organisation CIPO-RFM, to support their youth media project. CIPO-RFM stands for the Consejo Indígena Popular de Oaxaca “Ricardo Flores Magón”, an organisation that supports indigenous communities in the state of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Their work involves encouraging sustainable agricultural practices, defending the legal and economic rights of indigenous people, supporting gender equality in indigenous communities, and developing community-oriented media projects. RadioActive supported their work by providing equipment and training to set up a low-power FM radio station. The station was set up in four communities around the state of Oaxaca: Yucubey de Cuitlahuac, Cacalotepec, San Isidro Aloapam and San Isidro Reforma. While the station was set up we gave workshops on interview techniques, radio production, broadcast engineering and station management.
In the final community, San Isidro Reforma, they had already had a station running for several months. CIPO-RFM decided to use the equipment we brought to increase the power of their existing station. They then took the existing equipment to set up a station in Yucubey, the first community we visited. Radio Reforma 94.1 FM is now up and running. To hear a short audio clip from their daily opening show, please click on the link in the media bar on the left.
